Summary Itinerary
This itinerary offers a full day of adventure at Ngare Ndare Forest, a stunning natural reserve at the foothills of Mount Kenya. The forest is famous for its lush greenery, blue pools and the iconic canopy walk. The day includes hiking, wildlife viewing and relaxing at waterfalls.
Departure from Nairobi
0500hrs, depart Nairobi early in the morning to make the most of the day. The drive to Ngare Ndare Forest is about 3 to 4 hours. Approximately 200km via Nanyuki. Enjoy the sunrise over the scenic landscapes of central Kenya.
Arrival at Ngare Ndare Forest
0900hrs, arrive at the Ngare Ndare Forest office, where you’ll register and pay the park entrance fee. You’ll then meet your guide, who will brief you on the day’s hike and safety precautions. The forest is home to elephants, buffaloes, and other wildlife, so its essential to have a guide with you.
Start of the Ngare Ndare Forest Hike
0930hrs, begin your hike through the forest, which is approximately 6 to 7 kilometers long (round trip). The trail is moderately challenging, taking you through dense forest, with towering indigenous trees and rich biodiversity. keep an eye for the wildlife such as moneys, antelopes and birds. Along the way, walk through ancient trees such as yellowwoods and cedars, some of which are hundreds of years old. Your guide will help you spot wildlife, including the occasional elephant tracks or buffalo sightings.
Canopy Walk
1100hrs, arrive at the famous Ngare Ndare Canopy Walk, a 40-foot-high suspension bridge stretching 450 meters through the forest treetops. Walk among the forest canopy, with breathtaking views of the forest below and the possibility of spotting elephants from above. The bridge sways gently as you walk, making for a thrilling experience. Enjoy the cool breeze and sounds of nature as you traverse the bridge.
Hike to the Blue Pools
1200hrs, continue your hike down to the Ngare Ndare Blue Pools, which are crystal clear natural pools fed by springs and waterfalls. The trek to the pools take about 45 minutes from the canopy walk. You can take a refreshing dip in the cool, turquoise waters of the pools. The pools are perfect for swimming or just relaxing by the rocks. Alternatively you could also capture the stunning surroundings, including the vibrant greenery and the blue hues of the water.
Picnic Lunch by the Waterfall
1300hrs, enjoy a packed picnic lunch by the waterfalls or the pools. Sit back and relax to the sound of the rushing water while you enjoy your meal. There are plenty of scenic spots to spread out a blanket and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
Explore the Waterfalls
1400hrs, after lunch, spend some time exploring the waterfalls that feed the blue pools. The Ngare Ndare Falls are small but beautiful, with cascading water that creates a perfect backdrop for photos. You can decide to take a short walk around the waterfalls to explore hidden spots of wildlife. Alternatively you can stand under the waterfall for a natural shower or lay by the pools or nearby rocks and enjoy the serenity of the area.
Begin the Hike Back to the Forest Gate
1500hrs, start your activity back to the main gate of the forest. The return journey is leisurely, allowing you to soak in the last of the forest’s beauty. Your guide will share more stories about the forest’s history and ecosystems on the way back. At about 1700hrs, depart Ngare Ndare and begin your journey back to Nairobi.
Arrival In Nairobi
1830hrs, arrive back in Nairobi, concluding your adventure-filled day at Ngare Ndare Forest. Relax and recover after an active day of hiking and exploring.
